The synovial membrane also allows nutrient to pass throught it and is the way that the joint receives its nutrition as blood flow is poor or non existent within the joint itself.

The Synovium also known as the synovial membrane is a soft tissue that lines all synovial joints. The word "synovium" originates from a Latin word that means "with egg," because the synovial fluid in joints that have a cavity between the bearing surfaces is like an egg white.
