People who have asthma tend to think that there is no safe way that they can exercise. However there are safe ways for them to exercise. You can get into shape and looking good even if you have asthma.
Asthma is a lung disease that causes the person with asthma to have a lot of coughing, shortness of breath, and their chest may be real tight. Asthma is not something that you can not catch if you are too close to someone it is genetically passed on as well as environmentally influenced.
Some things that can trigger an asthma attack include viral infections, allergens, exercise and airway irritants including harsh chemical cleansers, as well as being exposed to dust mites or cockroaches.
There are several ways to avoid asthma attacks including:
1. Keeping your pets clean.
2. Staying away from smoke.
3. Staying inside when mold and pollen counts are high.
4. Wash bedding and stuffed toys regularly.
5. Frequent hand washing.
6. Annual flu shot.
7. Covering mouth and nose when outdoors in the winter.
8. Being proactive and knowing your own triggers and how to avoid them.
With all of these restrictions it may appear as if exercise is a bad idea. Most doctors will agree that you should exercise, and even play sports if you want to. You have to be a bit more cautious while doing these activities than some of the other players but you should still make attempts to stay fit and active.
One of the ways that most doctors agree on preventing attacks is to have your medications and inhaler close while you are exercising. You shouldn’t have to use the inhaler more than three times during any exercise session. If you are coughing and wheezing the night before then you should take it easy with your exercise session for the day.
For exercise induced asthma (EIA) symptoms are different. On the average the symptoms appear after a mere 6-10 minutes of exercise and are usually worse on cold days or in dry air.
People who have EIA can also exercise by doing things like swimming, walking, biking, downhill skiing, and team sports. Exercise is important and there are many choices for you to keep active.
Keeping in mind that asthma is a serious illness and not a figment of your imagination is important. Your doctor will work with you to treat your asthma but in the end it is your responsibility to take your treatment seriously.
Take your medications with you and remember not to skip doses. Don’t let asthma take over your life, take control of asthma and enjoy exercising as a part of your overall health plan.
