Bodybuilding and weight training are two of the misunderstood areas of weight workouts. A lot of people will interchange these terms without having a clear knowledge of the differences between them. Bodybuilding is not strength training and the goals and techniques used to be successful are different.
To build strength to lift heavy objects with relative ease is the goal of power lifting. The word is related to the definition of heavy object and can be seen clearly by people who want to move trucks. It could also be that the people involved in training is also trying to move their furniture or are professional movers.
In contrast, the primary goal of a bodybuilder is to build muscles, developing a muscled physique that is both toned and proportional. Lifting heavy weights is not the goal. It is practiced by both women and men who sport highly muscular, chiseled features.
Consideration of weight training in comparison to bodybuilding many people will want the best of both worlds, that is, a killer, toned, trim athletic body and also one that has functional strength for lifting and moving heavy objects.
The bodybuilding vs. weight training community has been bereft with some controversy. Some people believe that bodybuilding is terrible, that it is the worst thing that could have happened to strength training. When looking at a bodybuilder's muscles, they find them slow, stiff, and weak. To strength trainers, bodybuilders are one step above useless and bring a bad name to the weight training sport.
The bodybuilders opinion is in direct opposition to strength trainers. Bodybuilders feel that there is no use for strength training and that it shows no results that are measurable and visible so therefore, why waste time building strength.
While the controversy rages over whether bodybuilding vs. weight training is better or worst, judges continue to participate in competitions that measure both strength, endurance, speed and flexibility for weight trainers; and, cosmetic, sculpted muscles that are both toned and enlarged for bodybuilders.
Weight training vs. bodybuilding encompasses functional strength training which has shown itself to be a sport that has emerged from sports conditioning and rehabilitation. In the functional training model, a participant utilizes a well-rounded program that is designed to achieve efficient, safe performance of sports activities.
Participants, when looking at bodybuilding vs. weight training, need to weigh options that are available and ascertain their goals when choosing a sport. Weight training and bodybuilding, while different, are not mutually exclusive. Bodybuilders understand the basic tenets of the sport - avoid overtraining, create a balanced and sculpted body and avoid injury. When utilizing functional training with bodybuilding vs. weight training, the object is to decrease chances of injury, avoidance of overtraining and the need to build muscle in order to produce a balanced, stronger body.
While this sounds like a grim, serious scenario, the controversy hasn't failed to decrease the fun aspects of functional training. In fact, participants in both sports are both motivated and proud of their accomplishments which increases their chances for success. In both the weight training and bodybuilding arena, the addition of fun workouts, challenging and upbeat training sessions and camaraderie that comes from training and competition goes a long way towards adding to the excitement and motivation to pursue the sport.
There has been a movement afoot to add more functional weight training techniques to the bodybuilders workout, although there hasn't been a reciprocal leakage in the other direction. Weight trainers seem happy with their workouts remaining unchanged.
While the goals of each sport is unique, it is more and more clear that the bodybuilder will enhance and round out the workouts by adding more strength training which will lend itself to added flexibility and strength. In turn, the athlete who starts out strength training and focuses on sports performance only won't have the benefit of additional cosmetic enhancement through bulking up of muscles.
Evaluation of the differences between bodybuilding vs. weight training, prospective participants need to take into account overall goals, interest, time constraints and long-term wishes and motivation. Once your goals have been ascertained, you should write them down and stick with them.
