Achilles tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis
Achilles tendinitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the Achilles tendon. Find out what to look for and what you can do to prevent it from happening to you.
• Full article

The definition of Achilles tendinitis is inflammation of the achilles tendon.
The achilles tendon is responsible for attaching the calf muscle to the heel of the foot, and it is not just the achilles tendon that is affected with achilles tendinitis, the surrounding tissue such as connective tissue, blood vessels, and the periosteum are all affected.

Signs & symptoms of achilles tendinitis

  • constant pain or pain that is inistiated with movement
  • restricted motion of the ankle
  • crepitation is heard when the tendon moves
  • signs of swelling are visible such as redness and heat
  • tenderness felt apon palpation of the tendon

Possible causes of achilles tendinitis

  • overuse of the lower leg muscles or the achilles tendon
  • minor tear in the achilles tendon
  • previous injury to the lower leg, achilles tendon or foot

The best way to prevent achilles tendinitis is to stretch the tendon before any sport related activity, the stretching should be done after a proper warm up.
If you are unfortunate enough to be suffering from achilles tendinitis already then you need to start a proper rehabilitation program, and along with the rehabilitation program you should be using ice massage for about 10 minutes before and after to help reduce the inflammation and clear out any existing inflammation.

**Please alwaysconsult you doctor if you think you may have an injury**
