Grade 1 (mild strain) Slightly strained muscle without tearing of the muscle or tendon fibers. There is noticible loss of strength.
Grade 2 (moderate strain) Tearing of muscle or tendon fibers, usually at the attchement point of the muscle to the tendon. There is a noticible loss of strength.
Grade 3 (severe strain / rupture) A severe strain is when the muscle or tendon fibers rupture and there is a complete tearing of the mucle or tendon. In a grade 3 strain one will see the ruptured muscle fibers curl up under the skin. There is a partial to complete loss of strength and movement with grade three strains and they usually will require surgical repair.
It is very important to be able to indentify which grade of muscle or tendon strain you may be suffering from, because without proper diagnosis you may not be able to provide the proper care for your injury. If you think you have any grade of strain please consult you doctor as these injuries can very easily become cronic injuries that will haunt you for the rest of your life.
