Ankle Dislocation

dislocated ankle
Ankle dislocation is an injury that is ussually cause by high stress applied to the outside of the ankle and causes the joint to move in a way it was not designed for which results in the dislocation of the talus Bone.
• Full article

Definition

Ankle dislocation occurs when the talus bone is moved from the socket formed by the Tibia and Fibula bones. In most cases ankle dislocations are associated with fractures and sprains to ligaments and tendons of the ankle.

Parts Involved

  • bones of the ankle such as the talus, tibia and fibula
  • ligaments of the ankle which support the bones of the ankle
  • the numerous soft tissues tht surround the ankle joint

Signs & Symptoms

  • extreme pain at the moment of injury
  • bones become locked in abnormal positions
  • tenderness around ankle upon palpation
  • pain is elicited upon movement of the ankle and loss of ankle motion
  • swelling of the ankle and surrounding tissues
  • numbness of the foot or ankle

Causes

  • extreme stress on one of the sides of the ankle
  • biproduct of a ligament injury which resulted in instability of the ankle joint
  • chronic sprains and strains of the ankle
  • muscle contractions that re too powerful for the ankle joint

Rehabilitation

it is important to take it slow after an ankle dislocation as it usually takes approximately 15 to 20 weeks to fully heal and that is due to the sprained ligaments, it can take longer in surgery was needed to insert pins and screws.
One should start by walking with the use of crutches until the doctor clears the walking without cruches and okays weight bearing activities again.

As with any injury it is important to seek out medical advice as these injuries can quickly progress and lead to permanent damage and a chronic injury. So air on the side of caution if you suspect you have suffered an ankle injury as it might be an ankle dislocation and may need medical intervention.
