DefinitionAn overstretching of the one or more of the ankle ligaments resulting in partial tearing or those ligaments. The partial tearing of the supporting ankle ligaments results in loss of ankle function.
Parts Involved- supporting ligaments of the ankle
- The main bone of the ankle joint the fibula, tibia and talus bones
- surrounding tissues such as blood vessels, nerves and the periosteum of the bone
Signs & Symptoms- severe pain felt in the ankle at the time of injury
- popping or tearing feeling felt in the area of the ankle most likely on the outer aspect of the ankle
- tenderness in the ankle area upon palpation
- loss of ankle function most commonly started off by the person falling to the ground once the injury happens. The ankle joint will lose stability due to the tearing of the supporting ligaments which leads to the inability for the ankle to properly support weight.
- general instability of th joint and more play of the joint in the direction of the injured ligament
Causesexcessive stress put on either side of the ankle joint which forces the ankle ankle out of its normal lateral range of motion and leads to the over stretching of the ligaments and the eventual partial tearing seen with grade 2 ankle sprains.
Risks- pre existing ankle injury
- Sports with sudden impacts such as football, hockey etc
- sports that require the athlete to change direction suddenly such as basketball, football, hockey etc
- running on uneven ground or ground with holes such as a filed or road with potholes
- shoes that do not provide support for the foot and do not prevent the foot from rolling over
PreventionProper foot wear is very important in providing a stable platform for the foot and ankle but more importantly you should devise a flexibility and strengthening program designed for your sport or activity, which will help to develop and strengthen the ankle joint.
A
grade 2 ankle sprain is a very serious injury and should absolutely be looked at by a doctor as it can quickly become a complete tear of the ankle ligament involved and result in surgery to fix it. If you experience any of the above signs & symptoms of a grade 2 ankle sprain seek out medical advise to be on the safe side and prevent it from developing into something bigger than it has to be.
