Ankle Tenosynovitis

Ankle Tenosynovitis
Ankle Tenosynovitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the sheath covering a tendon.
• Full article

Definition

Ankle tenosynovitis is inflammation of the sheath that surrounds the tendon, and in the case of the ankle it involves a muscle of the lower leg and ankle and its sheath.

Parts Involved

  • tendon and its sheath of the foot or ankle
  • soft tissues of the ankle and surrounding structures

Signs & Symptoms

  • pain that is always present and more so during movement
  • limited range of motion of the ankle joint
  • heat and redness in the area of the ankle joint

Causes

  • more likely after repeated injury to the ankle
  • viral or bacterial infection that caused excessive inflammation
  • repetitive movements and unusual movements of the foot and ankle

Prevention

The one and only sure way to avoid ankle tenosynovitis is to avoid repetitive movements of the ankle. Keep in mind that a healthy and strong ankle joint is also a good preventative thing, so developing a flexibility and strengthening program for your ankle will go along way in avoiding ankle tenosynovitis.
