Broken hip? Strength training increases the chance that you will still be alive in a year
If older people who have broken their hip start strength training twice a week, the chance that they have to be admitted to a nursing home is drastically reduced. In addition, strength training reduces the chance that elderly people will die in the year after the hip fracture. This is evident from a small experimental study published in 2012 by Australian sports scientists in JAMDA.
The researchers, who were affiliated with the University of Sydney, recruited 124 people over 50 who had broken their hips and had to undergo surgery. Half of the subjects started strength training under supervision one and a half to two months after the bone fracture.
The training load was heavy. The subjects trained both their upper body and their lower body with 80 percent of the load with which they could just do 1 repetition.
The other half of the subjects did not train. This was the control group.
After brushing out the effect of age using statistical techniques, the researchers saw that strength training reduced the chance that the subjects would end up in a nursing home after their fracture by 84 percent.
Strength training also reduced the risk of death. The chance that subjects in the strength training group died was 81 percent smaller than in the control group.
